When talking about professions, Italian uses both 'fare' (to do) and 'essere' (to be). 'Faccio...' + definite article + profession is more common and informal. 'Sono...' + profession (no article) is correct but more formal.

When using 'fare', always use the definite article (il, la, l', i, gli, le) before the profession. When using 'essere', do not use the article.

Some professions have different masculine and feminine forms (e.g., 'attore/attrice'). Others are the same for both genders (e.g., 'insegnante').
